This is a piece I wrote for @wearebookanista celeb This is a piece I wrote for @wearebookanista celebrating the return of @capitalcrime1 to London. Its stunning relaunch was staged in the heart of Battersea Park, the two-hundred-acre Victorian parkland flanked by The River Thames and Battersea Power Station. The statistics are astounding considering this was only the festival’s second outing. Sheltered under two rather impressive tents and a canopied bar, one hundred and eighty authors, thirty-eight participating moderators, a half dozen security guards, fifteen sponsors, an army of FMcM publicists and a handful of volunteers came together with eager audiences to celebrate crime fiction in all its guises. Over three wonderful days in late September, hundreds of books were sold in the pop-up Goldsboro Bookshop in the Pump House Gallery and countless drinks were guzzled in the Capital Crime bar. Thank you to @davidhheadley @lizziecurle @goldsborobooks @fmcmassociates & countless others for putting together an amazing festival. I’ve been sewing! This was a gift for a dear Ice I’ve been sewing! This was a gift for a dear Icelandic friend who writes dark crime fiction, hence the macabre satin lining. My daughter Dani was kind enough to pose for a few photos on my roof terrace. The #novacoat pattern is available at @papercutpatterns . I bought the black wool coating fabric through @misanretail ‘s outlet Misan West on Goldhawk Road, London and the novelty lining fabric was purchased online from @spoonflower , designer #MaryZabaikina . The pattern runs large so I suggest going down a couple of sizes. It’s a bit like origami at times but easy to make as there are no buttons or zips. Happy to report that my friend was super pleased and it actually FIT. Will definitely be going back to this pattern soon! NB I also made the palazzo trousers Dani is wearing 😀. Feeling rejuvenated after spending two days explor Feeling rejuvenated after spending two days exploring Bath and hugging ancient Avebury stones with authors @beth_miller_author and @melissa.j.bailey. After a meandering tour of the city of Bath and drinks in the hotel’s garden, @jasonhewitt123 and @clairedouglasauthor joined us for dinner on Sunday evening where topics ranged from the seriously funny to the seriously inappropriate. Needless to say, we’ve decided to stick to that well known motto ‘What happens in Bath, stays in Bath or indeed Swindon’. On Monday, we were forced to part ways as I kidnapped Melissa for an impromptu road trip through the Wiltshire countryside which was gorgeous and awe-inspiring. We visited the stone circle in Avebury, Silbury Hill and West Kennet Long Barrow which dates back to 3650BC AND I successfully completed a half dozen u-turns in an array of driveways and FOUND a petrol station before it was too late. Mind clearly blown, Melissa Bailey is now house hunting in Wiltshire 😂😂😂 #avebury #bath #wiltshire #westkennetlongbarrow #silburyhill #writersofinstagram

According to Wikipedia, an incel, or involuntary celibate, is “a member of an online subculture of people who define themselves as unable to get a romantic or sexual partner despite desiring one.” United by a lethal form of misogyny, male adherents are becoming increasingly emboldened.
Pascal Engman’s Femicide shines a harsh spotlight on just how far incel fanatics, intent on doing harm, will go to infiltrate women’s lives through the use of technology and social media. Identities are stolen, profiles faked, and the use of real-time geolocation tagging makes it easy to stalk potential victims through applications such as Instagram. The novel will be a wake-up call for readers who normally associate Sweden with high levels of gender equality, Volvos and ABBA. It turns out that the country that introduced the world to the joys of flat-pack furniture has “the highest number of incels in the world per capita.”
The novel opens with the brutal murder of a young woman named Emelie Rydén. The killing presents as an open-and-shut case, but Vanessa Frank, the pragmatic detective brought in to investigate the crime, soon starts to see inconsistencies. With time, and through multiple points of view representing a rich cross-section of Swedish society, the city of Stockholm and its myriad problems are laid bare.
Pascal doesn’t shy away from depicting disturbing acts of brutality against women. The writing is clinical but never detached. It is a fine balance that the author handles with care. Anything less would be a disservice to the women who’ve been victimised. Though bleak, this isn’t a world without hope. There are stories of sacrifice, love and friendship throughout the book, the most touching coming from places that, to the outside observer, seem the most hopeless of all.

Set in Calcutta’s notorious red-light district S Set in Calcutta’s notorious red-light district Sonagachi, Rijula Das’s debut Small Deaths resists lazy stereotypes. Years of research have provided Das with an intimate understanding of the power dynamics at play between the madams, pimps and police, and how their often-cruel manoeuvrings have devastating consequences for the endless stream of girls and young women trafficked into modern-day sex slavery.
Now in her late twenties, Lalee was sold into sex work by her family as a child. Her dreams of freedom are tinged with an innate understanding that “hope was a bad survival strategy in Sonagachi.” Beautiful and fiercely intelligent, she has long since internalised her shame: “She couldn’t look in the mirror, its spotless surface too exposing, too confronting for her to endure.” Her loyal client Tilu Shau is also ambitious. Low caste and impoverished, he ekes out a living penning erotic novels while aspiring to write stirring histories of his beloved Calcutta and one day free Lalee from the Blue Lotus, a sprawling brothel run with an iron fist by Shefali Madam.
Following the brutal murder of her friend Maya, Lalee is lured upstairs to work with high-end clients who are willing to pay more money. She soon finds herself in a dangerous world defined by corruption and sexual brutality on a scale she never imagined possible. She will need all her courage and strength to escape Maya’s fate.
